Entropion and Ectropion

Entropion is turning or folding in of the eyelids; ectropion is turning or folding out of the eyelids.

Both are usually caused by horizontal loosening of the eyelid (like a loose tennis net), and also by weakness of the lower lid muscles (like the strap at the centre of a tennis net). Tightening on the outside or inside of the eyelid can also cause these conditions.

The lid is tightened by canthoplasty. The weak muscles are repaired and grafting is sometimes required to the inside or outside of the eyelids.
